Cavalier Web, hosted by CavalierKingCharles.net, is a dynamic portal site created for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel on-line community. It is powered by LAMP: a popular combination of Linux, Apache. MySQL, and php/Perl.
The CavvieSearch engine uses a script from Fluid Dynamics, (fdse) , and runs a Perl based web crawler to index remote sites. It is called through a php template via cURL - a neat solution originated at ravn.de. The Cavalinks classified links script, based on the Yahoo directory structure, is a modified version of phphoo. The Calendar is based on a php script by an unknown author, and has been enhanced with the addition of holiday, birthday, and show information. All other scripts were written in-house, courtesy of DozyRosy. Pedigree data for the Golden Oldies database was supplied initially by Bet Hargreaves. Most scripts are powered by MySql databases, apart from the CavvieSearch engine which currently uses a flat file database.
The site was created with Dreamweaver and Homesite, and uses custom php templates and cascading style sheets. Looking to the future, it aims eventually to be totally XHTML compliant. Graphics were created with Paint Shop Pro, and optimized for web usage with Ulead's Smartsaver Pro. Featured Cavaliers include Amy, Bryson, Dodger, Guinness, Rasmus, Rowan, Russet, and Xena.
